LaTeX to Markdown converter

Paste LaTeX or drop a .tex file and get Markdown back: \section becomes #, itemize becomes bullets, tabular becomes a GFM table and an equation becomes a $$ block. The title, author and date are kept as YAML front matter. Everything runs in this tab — nothing is uploaded.

Conversion options

Preamble commands such as \documentclass and \usepackage are dropped: they control typesetting, not content. A construct with no Markdown equivalent stays verbatim.

Runs entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded.

How to convert LaTeX to Markdown

  1. Paste LaTeX into the box above, drop a .tex file on it, or press Load sample. The Markdown is rebuilt as you type.
  2. Each construct is written out in Markdown: \section to \subparagraph become # to #####, lists keep their nesting, tabular keeps its column alignment, verbatim and lstlisting become fenced code blocks, and maths stays in $…$ so KaTeX or MathJax can typeset it.
  3. Copy the Markdown, download it as a .md file, or open it in the editor to check the rendering and keep editing.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a LaTeX to HTML converter?

Markdown is the target, not HTML: you get a file you can edit, diff and commit. There is no generated markup to clean up, and the output goes straight into a Markdown editor, a static site or a README.

What happens to equations?

Inline maths stays $…$ and display maths becomes a $$ block with the LaTeX preserved, so KaTeX or MathJax renders it exactly as typed. A \label inside the maths body is dropped, because it means nothing in Markdown.

Are tables and nested lists converted properly?

Yes. A tabular becomes a GFM table and its {lcr} column spec becomes the alignment row; \multicolumn keeps its text; a list nested inside a list is indented under its parent item, and description items become a bold term followed by the description.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The parser is bundled into this page and the conversion happens in the browser tab, file drops included; there is no account, no queue and no server-side job.

Want the document structure as JSON?

The LaTeX to JSON converter writes the same parse as a block tree, and JSON to Markdown reads that tree back if you would rather edit the structure than the text.
