Text to Markdown converter
Paste plain text or drop a .txt file and get Markdown back: paragraphs separated, bullet lines turned into lists, wrapped lines joined, and every character Markdown would misread escaped. Everything runs in your browser, so the file stays on your device.
Or drop a .txt file on this box.
Runs entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded.
How to convert text to Markdown
- Paste the text into the box above, or drop a
.txtfile: release notes, a copied email, an export from another tool. - The converter gives the text the structure it already implies: blank lines become paragraphs,
•,-and1)lines become Markdown lists, and wrapped lines are joined into single paragraphs. - Copy the Markdown or download it as a
.mdfile. Open it in the editor to check the rendering before you commit it.
What you get
- Text that renders as the text you pasted:
*,_, backticks and brackets are escaped, so2 * 3 = 6stays a sum instead of becoming emphasis. - Structure from what the file already says: paragraphs from blank lines, lists from bullet and numbered lines, nesting from indentation. Nothing is invented beyond that.
- A choice at each step: keep line breaks as hard breaks instead of joining them, leave lists alone, or turn escaping off when the file already contains Markdown you want to keep.
Frequently asked questions
Why are backslashes added to my text?
A backslash is how Markdown shows a character that would otherwise be formatting. Without it, 2 * 3 would open emphasis and a line starting with # would become a heading. Escaping keeps the words literal.
Are headings detected?
No. Plain text has no reliable way to say a line is a heading, and guessing would damage ordinary sentences. Add # where you want one, or paste the result into the editor and promote the lines you need.
What happens to hard-wrapped lines?
They are joined by default, because a text file's line breaks are usually just wrapping. Turn the option off to keep every break as a Markdown hard break instead.
Can I convert a .txt file without uploading it?
Yes. The conversion happens in the browser tab, so the file never leaves your device and the tool keeps working offline once it has loaded.
Want to see it rendered?
Open the result in the editor for a live preview, then export it to PDF, Word, HTML or PNG — or convert the other way with Markdown to TXT.
